Fall 2013 student interviews on science and research
Why aren't some psychology students interested in research?
People are not interested because it is demanding and it takes a lot of time, work and effort. Also, people don't find it to be too exciting, and they don't always know what to do with the results.
People tend to be more interested in the actual facts rather than the process and steps it takes to find out the facts. Research is a lot of work and involves a process many people do not want to take the time doing.
They are more interested in the human interaction aspect rather than the scientific aspect. They also think that it's unrelated to their counseling so they think it's boring.
Some psychology majors are not interested in research because it may not pertain to their specific career choice.
Some psychology students aren't interested in research because they either think it's boring, too time consuming, and feel as though a conclusion is enough.
We believe people are more interested in the answers rather than all of the research.
A lot of psychology majors just want to work with people, help them and have person to person contact.
What do the words science and research remind you of, and how do they make you feel?
Science and research reminds them of in depth data to everyday things, and it makes them feel intrigued.
Reminds some of a high school science fair having to choose an experiment and researching for it, also things such as scientists, labs, microscopes reading, investigation, finding and learning about new things come to mind. Hearing these words at first make you feel like a lot of work will be involved which can lead to feelings such as being overwhelmed and intimated but can still have a rewarding outcome.
Basically, when thinking of science and research most people think of hard sciences such as biology and chemistry. They also think of busy work on the computer, note taking and compiling data using the scientific method and a hypothesis.
We summarized it as being time consuming I conduct experiments and create hypothesis. The work load makes them anxious yet excited to learn and discover new things.
They are very important to the human body and it makes one feel very stressed.
We found out that we both thought of the scientific portion of research but one thought of it as boring and the other thought of it as exciting.
We found conflicting views towards doing research. Some are excited at the prospect of conducting studies and tests while others do not have an interest in doing so. When asked what comes to mind when "research" is brought up people answered they thought of the more scientific side of Psychology where data, graphs and more tangible things are utilized.
People feel indifferent towards and feels that it's hard work but it's necessary and it peaks the curiosity.
People's opinions on science and research vary from being interested to feeling nervous. You either are very passionate and dedicated or you're not.
