Advisement for the spring 2025 semester
If you are finishing your degree and graduating after the current semester, congratulations! 🎓👏🏽

If you are NOT graduating, it's time to select classes for the spring semester.
Email your advisor if you have any questions or to set up an advisement meeting:
     Burt Thompson, [email protected]
     Donna Thompson, [email protected]

To find out when you can register, consult the registration schedule on the Records office webpage. The link to the schedule PDF is about halfway down the page under Registration Schedule.

Start by looking over your degree progress in Self Service.  Decide which courses you need to take next (see guidelines below). Next, look over the list of spring course offerings. Put together your desired schedule, and include a few alternative courses in case your first choice isn't available.

If a class is closed (no available seats): Either choose another section or class, or ask permission to be force-added to the class. You will need to contact the course instructor and/or the department to ask for permission. For example, if you want to force-add into a closed criminal justice class, you need to contact the criminal justice department to see if you can get permission.

Email me when your proposed schedule is on Self Service so I can review it.

  • FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS
    • Five 3-hour courses each semester is considered the standard full-time course load
    • Take PSY 101 if you haven't done that yet.  It is a prerequisite for all other psychology classes.
    • If you are taking PSY 101 now (or have already completed it):
      • You don't need a math course, because PSY 221 (usually taken in the fall of second year) will count as your Quantitative Reasoning course (Pillar II)
      • You may not need a Natural Science Inquiry (NSI) course, because you will take two NSI psych courses. This depends on what minor you choose, if you choose a minor.
      • take one or two 200-level PSY courses, such as 201, 211, 215, 231, 252
      • take two or three Pillar II Inquiry courses (e.g., Religion, Philosophy, English, History)
  • SECOND-YEAR STUDENTS
    • Contact me if you want to discuss switching to the new general education requirements
    • Take PSY 222 if you are now taking PSY 221 or have completed it
    • Take one or two other required PSY courses--the rest of your courses can be foundation/distribution courses
    • If you're planning to eventually attend graduate school, talk to me or any faculty member about getting research experience
  • THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS
    • Take PSY 222 if you are now taking PSY 221 or have completed it
    • Take PSY 361
    • If you're planning to eventually attend graduate school, talk to me or any faculty member about getting research experience
  • SENIORS GRADUATING IN MAY
    • Take PSY 361 and PSY 481 if you haven’t already.  Both are required to graduate.
    • Check with the Dean's office if you want to verify that you are on track to graduate.
    • If you plan to attend graduate school, some programs have deadlines in the fall and some early in the spring, so make sure you know when those are. Ask me or any faculty member about the grad school application process.

Email me when your proposed schedule is on Self Service. I will review it, then you can register when the time comes.

If you have questions, we can also talk on the phone, over zoom, or meet in person if you want--just email me to set up an appointment.
