Advisement for the fall 2023 semester
If you are finishing your degree after the current semester and graduating, congratulations! 🎓👏🏽

If you are NOT graduating, it's time to select classes for the next semester. I will be doing advisement by email starting Monday, March 27.  We can also meet over zoom or in person if you want--just email me to set up an appointment.

To find out when you can register, consult the registration schedule on the Records office webpage. The link to the schedule PDF is on the right side of the page.

Start by reviewing your degree progress in Self Service.  Decide which courses you need to take next (see guidelines below).  If you're not sure what courses you need, just email me and we'll figure it out. Next, look over the list of course offerings. Put together your desired schedule. Include a few alternative courses in case your first choice isn't available. Please check the days and times courses are offered so you don’t try to register for two classes that overlap or meet at the same time.
  • If you will be a FIRST-YEAR STUDENT in the fall
    • Five 3-hour courses each semester is considered the standard full-time course load
    • Take PSY 101 if you haven't done that yet. It is a prerequisite for all other psychology classes. Register for the "psychology majors only" section of 101 if it is available.
      • take three or four foundation/distribution courses (e.g., English, Religion, Social Science, free elective)
    • If you are taking PSY 101 now (or have already completed it):
      • take one or two 200-level PSY courses, such as 221, 201, 211, 215, 231, 252
  • If you will be a SECOND-YEAR STUDENT in the fall
    • Take PSY 221 if you haven't already
    • If you are currently taking PSY 221, take PSY 222 either in the fall or next spring.
    • Take one or two other required PSY courses--the rest of your courses can be foundation/distribution courses
    • If you're planning to eventually attend graduate school, talk to me or any faculty member about getting research experience
  • If you will be a THIRD-YEAR STUDENT in the fall
    • If you have not completed PSY 221 yet, you should register for both 221 and 222.
    • If you're planning to eventually attend graduate school, talk to me or any faculty member about getting research experience.
    • Departmental Honors Program: You are eligible if your GPA in psychology courses is at least 3.5 and you are not participating in the University Honors Program. You complete a research thesis under the supervision of a faculty member during your senior year. You receive credit for six semester hours (PSY 406 in fall, PSY 407 in spring) and are recognized as an Honors Student at commencement. If interested, contact me or any other faculty member.
  • If you will be a FOURTH-YEAR STUDENT in the fall
    • Take PSY 481 in the fall or next spring. It is a required course.
    • If you're planning to eventually attend graduate school, talk to me or any faculty member about getting research experience. Also, research which graduate programs you want to apply to. Some have application deadlines in the fall. Ask me or any faculty member about the grad school application process. Also, look at the grad school resource books in the psychology student lounge (DePaul room 10), and in the library (just ask a reference librarian).

Email your proposed schedule to me at wbt@niagara.edu.  Be sure to include complete course numbers and sections (e.g., PSY 221B). Once we have decided on your schedule, I can unlock your account so you can register when the time comes.

We can also talk on the phone, over zoom, or meet in person if you want--just email me to set up an appointment.
